Physical Education and Sport at Woodfield

At Woodfield School we have strived to create a sports rich environment that provides pupils with numerous and wide ranging opportunities to be physically active each and every day.
While at Woodfield School pupils will learn about the different components of physical fitness and they will gain the skills needed to ensure good health in this area throughout their life.
Pupils will have access to an extensive range of sports and this will allow them to find activities that are well suited to them. We aim to give our pupils a love and enthusiasm for being activity that they will take forward into their adult lives.
Examples of opportunities to be physically active at Woodfield School include;
 

PE Curriculum Time

KS3 pupils take part in 100 mins of PE each week. KS4 pupils take part in up to 200mins of PE each week. 

Activities available to pupils through curriculum time include;
Ball Skills, Gymnastics, Dance, Football, Basketball, Hockey, Health Related Fitness, Orienteering, Swimming, Tennis, Athletics, Cricket, Rounders, Softball, Lacrosse, Rugby, Cycling, Boccia.

Every pupil in the school has the opportunity to follow a swimming course for at least half a term every year.

Every pupil has the opportunity to learn to ride a bicycle.

Every pupil has the opportunity to take part in out of school activities.

Sixth Form
Sports Afternoon on Tuesday P5 and P6. Here pupils take part in a wide range of sporting activities, including swimming sports hall activities at Aspire Leisure centre, gym sessions at Barnet Copthall, Duke of Edinburgh Award and school based activities.

Duke of Edinburgh Award
Pupils in KS4 and KS5 have the opportunity to take part in the D of E award. The program involves overnight camping and hiking expeditions.

    

Thursday Afternoon KS4 Sports
Period 5 and 6 every Thursday afternoon is timetabled for Key Stage 4 sports if they are not off site for the day taking part in vocational education. Pupils go swimming, or do school based activities. When in school pupils take part in an intensive 50 min circuit training session. This includes work on mobility, flexibly, muscular strength and cardio vascular system.

Trampolining at Woodfield School
Woodfield School 2 full size trampolines. Woodfield Staff have been trained to deliver coaching sessions to pupils. These sessions are very popular especially with the base classes.


Bikes, Scooters and Trikes
The PE Department has invested in bikes, big scooters and drifting trikes. These have proved very popular with all pupils.


Cycling
The school has purchased an extensive range of cycling equipment. Pupils have the opportunity to learn how to ride a bike and take part in coaching sessions at Harrow Pump (BMX) track. The school also has a small BMX track used by pupils during some cycling sessions.
 

Inter – School Competitions and Festivals
Over 95% of pupils have represented the school in an inter–school fixture or festival over the last year of pre Covid restrictions.

Fixtures and festivals include;

  • Middlesex FA Football League (runs on a weekly basis over the autumn and spring terms, includes teams for upper school boys, lower school boys, whole school boys and whole school girls).

Residentials
Each year every pupil has the opportunity to go on a week long residential activity holiday. Pupils here take part in a range of outdoor activities including;
Raft building, Canoeing, Abseiling, Rock Climbing, High Ropes, Sailing, Surfing, Wind surfing etc


Overnight Arundel Cricket Trip
Every year the PE department runs 2 overnight trips to Arundel Castle Cricket Club. One trip is for girls and the other is for boys. Pupils play cricket, visit Arundel Castle, stay at Goodwood House and play at the beach.

 

Sports Day
Whole school Sports Day takes place once a year.

Breaktime and Lunchtime Sports
During these times PE department provides clubs in a number of different sports in the school gym. Also during these times pupils have opportunity to take part in activities in the playground, football cage and gym. Staff are timetabled to run these sessions.

Golden Time
Every Friday Period 6 is Golden Time. Here pupils select activities they want to do. The School puts on a number of sporting activities during this time.

Sport Relief
Every 2 years Woodfield School takes part in Sport Relief. The PE Dept run a whole school fitness circuit in the school playground.
